Unlike the hydraulic disc brakes commonly found in passenger cars, air disc Brake calipers use compressed air as the power source. During braking, compressed air enters the air chamber at the rear of the caliper, actuating an internal piston or wedge mechanism. This force is then transmitted through a mechanical structure (such as multiple internal pistons) to evenly apply pressure on both brake pads, clamping them against the brake disc that rotates with the wheel. This generates significant friction, enabling vehicle deceleration and braking. This "air-over-hydraulic" or "air-actuated mechanical" approach is particularly suited for the high-load demands of heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
